Speaking at Texas Dental Association 2011

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

For the next few days San Antonio is hosting the annual meeting of the Texas Dental Association 2011. Dr. Steve Schmitt and I will be conducting three courses and sitting on a panel discussion.

Tomorrow (Thursday) morning our topic is on how NeXsmile fits into the general dentist’s practice. We will discuss a number of extremely challenging problems and show remarkable case studies that open up new alternative approaches to treatment.

We will show cases where rapid dramatic treatment delivering optimum aesthetics and firm stable teeth actually turn what were our most easily frustrated patients in any dental practice into raving fans. It is possible for dentists to refer patients for the one complicated procedure and then receive the patient back to manage the care from that point on. We will show what this will look like for those dentists in terms of efficiency, ease and economics.

Thursday afternoon, the presentation and discussion turn to more technical topics. We will discuss cone beam computer tomography and how it improves diagnosis and treatment planning. We will also show how a virtual treatment plan can improve surgical and restorative outcomes.

On Saturday morning our topic will be around how virtual dentistry affects the dental laboratory and aids in communication between dentists and labs. This three hour course is followed by a panel discussion continuing along the line of advancements in dental laboratory procedures.

I will have materials on the website that attendees and others can download and we will keep them up for at least month. Also I look forward to posting how it all went once this week is behind us.

On a personal note, I declare to the world that I have a great mom! She swims a half mile a day in her 80′s and is just a delightful person to be with. She lives in Loma Linda, California a few blocks from the dental school. More about Loma Linda and our work with them on future posts.

Blogging on MySA.com

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

I have started writing a blog for MySA.com to provide the local South Texas community information on topics in dentistry. This is the official website for San Antonio Express News. The fun part for me is I get to pick the topics and I’m shooting for variety. Take a look and tell me what you think.

Also, if you have a question, topic of interest or would like to contribute something, let me know. http://blog.mysanantonio.com/benyoung/

One Patient, Eleven Implants and New Teeth

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Dr. Kerry Nelson came by to see a FirstSmile procedure performed on his patient. Later he will be jumping in to help in the transition from this immediate set of teeth to the custom-milled titanium frame NeXsmile. Using surgical guides generated from a virtual 3D model, we were able to place 5 implants across the mandibular arch and 6 implants around the maxillary arch. (Instead of “All-on-4″ ala Nobel and ClearChoice, these are “All-on-5 and 6″).

We used the Neoss dental implant for this procedure and it went extremely well. Thank you,  Mr. Kirk Biggens with Neoss, for spending much of the day with us making sure his system worked and. He also was able to  learn a few NeXsmile procedural steps so he can show off in front of the other Neoss reps at an upcoming meeting in California this coming January. Steve and I look forward to interacting with the Neoss organization.

Once the lower new teeth were ready to be secured to the implants, it took Dr. Schmitt 7 minutes from start to finish. Midline and occlusal plane are spot on (for non-dentists, this means everything worked and no adjustments were necessary). I love it when a plan comes together. We will check the patient tomorrow and make minor adjustments after the local anesthesia has worn off.
